Welcome:

Band helps students to think outside the box
While students experience the thrill of performing, they're also learning critical thinking and problem-solving skills, teamwork, creativity and innovation, professionalism and mathematics. A 2005 study by the Society for Human Resource Management study found school systems are based on agricultural and industrial models that underestimate the value of studying the arts. A 2009 survey of the SMNW bands found that band students not only excel in musical activities but also academically. In addition to National Merit finalists, band members participate in everything from cheerleading, theater and cross country to Scouts, bowling and robotics club. Arts education provides the skills to help students succeed in a global economy. To that end, band provides a built-in social network of peer mentoring that guides students through the maze of high school, helping them to envision and meet their life goals.
Why Band: In their own words
Students were asked to comment on what band means to them and how important being in elementary band was to them.
"Band has been a powerful influence on my high school career, one that I would happily choose again.... it has taught me invaluable lessons that will reach far beyond the classroom, such as leadership, cooperation, and a deep-seated drive for excellence" - Jordan
"Band is more than just playing music. Through the years I've learned the values of friendship, leadership and responsibility. I've worn a purple ribbon to support a fellow band member, I've marched harder and longer than I thought I could physically stand, and I've created friendships that will last a lifetime. Without band I would not be the person I am today" - Lauren
"Elementary band is where my love of music was found.... It was and still is the best part of my day at school." - Sara
"The band program has provided me with friends. The teachers and students I work with every day are the warmest and brightest people I have ever met. Being part of the band program gives one the opportunity to spend time with other students to establish strong bonds of knowledge, friendship, and the lifelong pursuit of education and personal improvement. " - Joey
"I have been involved in many sports through my high school years, but as a senior I never imagined that the most important part of my high school career would turn out to be band and orchestra. I could not imagine what high school would have been like without them." - Arjun
